The Risk Sheet

Every line on the sheet, and where it comes from.

Three real sheets on cars you already stock, rendered live from the engine, with the source beside each figure and the fields we cannot fill shown as not available.

The samples run at Pennsylvania's labor rate, $130/hr, on a 36-month, 36,000-mile note. Your sheets run at your state’s rate and your term.

2013 HYUNDAI SONATA

128,000 miles2.0L 4-cyl or 2.4L 4-cyl (VIN would settle it)labor $130/hr (PA)

This model year was offered with a 6-speed automatic (2.0L 4-cyl turbo, 2.4L 4-cyl) and a 6-speed manual (2.4L 4-cyl); the VIN does not settle which (EPA label configurations, n=3). EPA label configurations, one row per certified variant, not per trim sold.

Manufacturer-filed specification; a blank field means the maker did not file it, never that the car lacks the feature.

Each row is a repair named in NHTSA complaint narratives for this model year, matched by keyword on the owner narrative with the same rules that price it; the share is that repair’s complaints over the odometer complaints for the model years the window used. The window is where the middle half of those complaints were filed; the share lines come from a 10,000-mile histogram of the same complaints. Owner complaints are self-selected; the band is typical parts plus hours at $130/hr (PA), not a quote for this car.

A window is the p25 to p75 odometer range of NHTSA complaints naming that system for this model year. Reference bands are typical parts plus hours at $130/hr (PA), typical for this system, not a diagnosis: the record names the system, not the part.

Not a survival curve: the denominator is complaints filed above this mileage, which excludes every car that never failed and every owner who did not file.

On file with NHTSA

1,909 complaints on file for this model year (filed 2012-2026): 1,026 with an odometer reading, 97 reporting a fire, 93 a crash, 77 injured, 1 killed, as filed by the complainants. 957 were filed within 6 years of the model year.

Complaint volume in line with adjacent model years (6-year filing window).

  • ENGINE: 735 complaints, 65 report a fire (9% of them), 18 a crash (2% of them), 12 injured, as filed by the owners.
  • STEERING: 341 complaints, 2 report a fire (1% of them), 11 a crash (3% of them), 9 injured, 1 killed, as filed by the owners.
  • ELECTRICAL SYSTEM: 260 complaints, 25 report a fire (10% of them), 7 a crash (3% of them), 9 injured, as filed by the owners.
  • EXTERIOR LIGHTING: 197 complaints, 12 report a fire (6% of them), 2 a crash (1% of them), 1 injured, as filed by the owners.
  • UNKNOWN OR OTHER: 174 complaints, 9 report a fire (5% of them), 8 a crash (5% of them), 7 injured, 1 killed, as filed by the owners.

Owner complaints filed to NHTSA, deduplicated per complaint; roughly a third carry an odometer reading and every window is built on those. A count is not a rate: a model that sold twice as many cars files roughly twice as many complaints, and filings rise with news coverage and recalls.

What this sheet cannot tell you
  • Whether this particular car has the problem. The record describes the model year at a mileage, not this VIN.
  • What the car is worth. Keep MMR, Black Book, or your own number for that.
  • What a repair will cost on this car. Bands are typical parts plus hours at a labor rate, not a quote.
  • Whether a recall was completed. Run the VIN on NHTSA's recall lookup.
  • Anything about the borrower. The sheet never sees or asks for customer data.
  • Whether the car should be bought. That is your call, made with the car on a lift.

On file with NHTSA

1,114 complaints on file for this model year (filed 2013-2026): 668 with an odometer reading, 8 reporting a fire, 52 a crash, 60 injured, 1 killed, as filed by the complainants. 795 were filed within 6 years of the model year.

Complaint volume in line with adjacent model years (6-year filing window).

  • EXTERIOR LIGHTING: 299 complaints, 4 a crash (1% of them), as filed by the owners.
  • POWER TRAIN: 209 complaints, 1 report a fire (under 1% of them), 2 a crash (1% of them), 2 injured, as filed by the owners.
  • AIR BAGS: 208 complaints, 2 report a fire (1% of them), 32 a crash (15% of them), 44 injured, 1 killed, as filed by the owners.
  • SUSPENSION: 132 complaints, 3 a crash (2% of them), 3 injured, as filed by the owners.
  • UNKNOWN OR OTHER: 82 complaints, 1 report a fire (1% of them), 3 a crash (4% of them), 1 injured, as filed by the owners.

Owner complaints filed to NHTSA, deduplicated per complaint; roughly a third carry an odometer reading and every window is built on those. A count is not a rate: a model that sold twice as many cars files roughly twice as many complaints, and filings rise with news coverage and recalls.

Sized at 12,000 miles a year. Known work counts curated profiles only; complaint windows above are reference, not part of this figure.

Reference only, not part of the set-aside: complaint-weighted exposure across in-term repairs at your rate, about $750 (share of complaints in the term times the band midpoint). Not a survival curve: the denominator is complaints filed above this mileage, which excludes every car that never failed and every owner who did not file.

Manufacturer-filed specification; a blank field means the maker did not file it, never that the car lacks the feature.

A window is the p25 to p75 odometer range of NHTSA complaints naming that system for this model year. Reference bands are typical parts plus hours at $130/hr (PA), typical for this system, not a diagnosis: the record names the system, not the part.

On file with NHTSA

683 complaints on file for this model year (filed 2011-2026): 487 with an odometer reading, 6 reporting a fire, 16 a crash, 13 injured, 0 killed, as filed by the complainants. 346 were filed within 6 years of the model year.

Complaint volume in line with adjacent model years (6-year filing window).

  • ENGINE: 354 complaints, 3 report a fire (1% of them), 3 a crash (1% of them), as filed by the owners.
  • VISIBILITY/WIPER: 121 complaints, 2 injured, as filed by the owners.
  • POWER TRAIN: 84 complaints, 1 report a fire (1% of them), 1 a crash (1% of them), 1 injured, as filed by the owners.
  • ELECTRICAL SYSTEM: 70 complaints, 1 report a fire (1% of them), 1 a crash (1% of them), 1 injured, as filed by the owners.
  • FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM: 54 complaints, 1 report a fire (2% of them), as filed by the owners.

Reference only, not part of the set-aside: complaint-weighted exposure across in-term repairs at your rate, about $1,000 (share of complaints in the term times the band midpoint). Not a survival curve: the denominator is complaints filed above this mileage, which excludes every car that never failed and every owner who did not file.

The field key

What each line means

In the order the sheet prints them. Each entry says what the line is, where it comes from, and what it cannot mean.

Header: vehicle, miles, rate, engine version
Year, make and model come from the VIN decode when a VIN is given, otherwise from what you typed. Mileage is the odometer you gave us; when none is given the sheet assumes one and marks it (assumed). The spec line is what the maker filed with NHTSA (vPIC) and what EPA lists: engine, fuel, hybrid or plug-in hybrid, drive, gearbox, body, and trim when filed. A blank means the maker did not file it, never that the car lacks the feature. When vPIC could not decode the VIN clean (a bad check digit, a partial decode) the sheet says so in amber: VIN decoded with a warning. Under the spec, when EPA has label configurations for the model year, the sheet says what it was offered with (a CVT on one engine, a stepped automatic on another) and whether the VIN’s engine settles which one this car has; label configurations are one row per certified variant, not per trim sold. The labor rate and state are the ones every band on the sheet was priced at. The small version string is the engine build that made the sheet, so a sheet from last month can be set beside one from today.
State badge
One of four. Inside a complaint window (red) means a repair with at least 10 complaints on file carries real exposure inside your term: the share of its complaints filed in the miles you will carry, times the midpoint of its typical band, comes to $250 or more (or the share alone is 30 percent or more). Position does not decide it: a repair the car is past still flags when a real share of the record lies ahead, and a thin line never flags on position alone. Where no histogram exists yet, a mechanical system whose window is open at this car’s miles, or opens inside the term, flags instead. Verify with the OEM (amber) means no window is open but a recall, an open federal investigation, or a warranty-extension communication is on file for the model year. No flags on file (green) means the record is present and none of the above was found. It is not a clean car; it is a model year with nothing on file at this mileage. Insufficient record (grey) means fewer than 5 complaints are on file for the model year and no component reached 5 with odometer readings, so the sheet cannot place the car against anything. The Flags list under the badge is the reason for it, one line per finding.
Complaint window
For each system NHTSA names on this model year, the sheet takes every complaint that carried an odometer reading and finds the middle half: the 25th to the 75th percentile of the miles at which owners filed. That range is the window. Inside means this car’s odometer sits within it. Opens in means the car has not reached the 25th percentile yet, with the miles to go. Past means it is beyond the 75th. A car past the window may have had the work, may still need it, or may never; the record cannot say which, so the sheet tells you to ask for the repair history rather than guess. Share lines come from a 10,000-mile histogram of the same complaints: the share filed at or above this car’s miles, the share filed in the next miles of your term, and, when at least 20 complaints and a tenth of the window sit at or above this car’s miles, the share of those that came in the next miles of your term (“of the 61 filed at or above 128k, 41% came in the next 36k”). That last figure is not a survival curve: its denominator is complaints filed above this mileage, which excludes every car that never failed and every owner who did not file. A window also carries its 95th percentile, and a car beyond it is marked past the record: 95 in 100 of the odometer readings on file were lower.
Repair windows by category
The same complaints, read for the repair they name. Each narrative is matched by keyword with the same rules that price repairs (timing, transmission and CVT, engine internals, and the rest of the 26 categories) and the window, sample size, basis, and histogram shares are computed per category. Each row also carries its share: “38 of 212 odometer complaints (18%) name this repair”, where 212 is every complaint with an odometer reading for the model years the window used. It is a share of complaints, not a failure rate. This is the line a dealer wants: the repair by name with its typical band, instead of a system with five bands. Only categories with five or more complaints appear; only those with ten or more can flag. Owner complaints are self-selected and carry no denominator: a count is not a rate.
n and basis
n is the number of complaints with odometer readings behind the window, never the total complaint count. Basis is the model year or years those complaints came from. The exact model year is used whenever it has 5 or more. When it does not, adjacent years are pooled, one either side first and then three, by weighting each year’s quartiles by its n, and the row says pooled with the span. A 2013 sheet never prints a 2011 window under a 2013 label without saying so. An exact-year row also says when its complaints were filed (“filed 2013-2026”): the first and last calendar year an owner filed on that model year.
Reference bands
NHTSA’s taxonomy names the system, not the part: a complaint files under Power Train or Engine, not under valve body or timing chain. So each system maps to the repair categories that live under it, and the sheet shows every one of them at your labor rate. That is why bands are by system and not by part. The record cannot say which part, and pretending otherwise would be a guess dressed as a figure. Safety and body systems carry no band, because they are recall questions, not repair budgets.
Complaint totals, volume against adjacent years, and severity
The totals line counts every complaint NHTSA holds for the model year, deduplicated per complaint, with the filing window, how many carried an odometer reading, and the fires, crashes, injuries and deaths the owners themselves reported. Under it, when the record allows, the sheet sets this model year against the two either side on the same 6-year filing window: the number of complaints filed within six years of the model year, so a 2013 and a 2015 are counted over the same stretch of their lives. A year with 1.75 times the median of its neighbors flags as heavy, with the system whose share rose most beside it. The comparison is withheld when a neighbor has under a third of this year’s complaints, because that gap is a redesign or a change in how NHTSA spelled the model, not a bad year; model years whose 6-year window has not closed say partial window. None of it is adjusted for sales: a model that sold twice as many cars files roughly twice as many complaints, and filings rise with news coverage and recalls. The severity lines then give the top systems by complaint count with the fires and crashes reported under each; injuries and deaths print only when nonzero and never as a rate.
Recalls
Every campaign in NHTSA’s recall files for the model year: campaign number, subject, component, the date NHTSA received the report, the units the manufacturer said were potentially affected and how many model years the campaign spans. Beside each is the completion the manufacturer last reported to NHTSA (“79% of the recalled population reported remedied as of 2026-Q2, so roughly 1 in 5 may still be open”); manufacturers began reporting in 2015, so older campaigns say no completion report on file, and a campaign without one says completion rate not reported. Do Not Drive and Park Outside advisories, campaigns NHTSA rather than the maker initiated (ODI-influenced) and the build window for this model year are marked when filed. Campaign-wide figures reported by the manufacturer describe the recalled population, not this VIN: whether this car was remedied was not checked. When the recall files hold nothing for the model year the list comes from NHTSA’s live API instead, without completion. Completion is per VIN and lives in NHTSA’s lookup, which every sheet links. Run the VIN there.
Federal investigations
NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation files for the model year: the action number, whether the file is open or closed, the subject, and how it closed: with a recall, joined to that campaign’s affected units and reported completion when the recall files hold it (“closed Nov 2013 with recall 13V464 (1,558 vehicles, 91% remedied)”), or after so many months with no recall. An open investigation is a flag on its own.
Manufacturer communications
A count of the bulletins and communications NHTSA holds for the model year, and the warranty programs, extensions, and manufacturer service campaigns listed by document number, the maker’s campaign id when filed, date, and title from NHTSA’s manufacturer-communications file. Each extension is read for the repair it covers, matched by the same 26 rules that price repairs, and carries that category’s typical band at your rate; when the summary states the extended term (“84 months/84,000 miles”) the sheet checks it against this car’s age and miles and says whether the car is inside the term or past it. Inside the term is not coverage: eligibility needs a franchised dealer’s diagnosis and a VIN check, and the set-aside never subtracts an extension. Rows NHTSA typed as warranty extensions say nothing more; rows promoted because their summary names a warranty extension, special coverage or customer satisfaction program are marked keyword match, and the terms are the manufacturer’s stated terms at publication, which can carry VIN ranges or exclusions the summary does not show. A warranty program on file is the strongest known-issue tell in the record, and the sheet says to ask a franchised dealer to run the VIN against each one by name. Plain repair bulletins stay a count.
Warranty
Published factory terms for the make, checked against the car’s age and mileage. The sheet assumes an in-service date of January of the model year, which is usually early and therefore conservative. For Hyundai, Kia, Genesis and Mitsubishi the 10-year, 100,000-mile powertrain term is original-owner only, so the sheet applies the second-owner term of 5 years or 60,000 miles and says so on the line. Every car you carry on a note is a second-owner car.
Repair set-aside for the term
Two parts, added and rounded to $50. Maintenance expected inside the term is the baseline schedule (brakes, tires, fluids, belts, batteries) for the years the term spans, scaled for a partial last year, each item priced as typical parts plus hours at your rate, with the expected figure taken as the midpoint of the item’s range. Known work already inside its window is failure work from a curated profile whose window this car has entered, weighted by the planning prior described under the method. Most mainstream cars have no curated profile, so this line is often $0, and the sheet shows the $0 rather than hiding the row. Complaint windows do not feed this figure; they sit above it as reference. It is a planning figure, not a lending decision, and the sheet says so on the line. Under it, labeled reference only, is a separate figure that is never added in: the share of each repair category’s complaints filed inside the term times the midpoint of its band, summed across categories. It weights the record by money so two sheets can be compared; it is not a survival curve and not an expected cost.
Unreviewed research (not counted)
The engine can draft a profile of a generation from an AI research pass. No one has reviewed those drafts, so they never contribute a dollar anywhere: when one exists the sheet lists its lines under a heading that says not counted, each with a band or no band and a window or no window. On dealer sheets, including the three above, the research pass is off entirely. The sheet stands on the federal record alone, so the section does not appear.
Method

How every number is made

Parts plus hours, times the rate. Every dollar on the sheet is the same arithmetic: a typical parts range plus a typical hours range, the hours multiplied by the labor rate printed at the top of the sheet, rounded to the nearest $10. No figure is looked up from a quote database and no model writes a number.

26 repair categories, calibrated August 2026. The bands come from 26 repair categories, from transmission and valve body down to a general bucket. Each category’s all-in range at the national rate was checked in August 2026 against published ranges: RepairPal’s national estimator first, and AAA, Recurrent (for EV packs) and other published guides where RepairPal has no national figure. A category deliberately spans its cheapest common job to its priciest, because it prices many distinct failures under one system. An audit script flags any category that drifts outside its benchmark.

The labor rate is a wage ratio. The rate is a $135 national base scaled by the Bureau of Labor Statistics mean hourly wage for automotive service technicians in your state, divided by the national mean. That is its limit: it is a wage ratio, not a shop-rate survey. The BLS does not publish what shops charge, and the spread between two shops in one town can be wider than the spread between two states. The sheet prints the rate it used beside every band so you can re-price in your head.

Window rules. A window is the 25th to 75th percentile of odometer readings on complaints naming one system for one model year. It needs at least 5 complaints with odometer readings or it is not drawn. The exact model year is used first; if it falls short, the year either side is pooled, then three either side, weighting each year’s quartiles by its count, and the row is labeled pooled. Inside means this car’s odometer is between the two percentiles. A window opening inside your term counts as exposure. A window this car has passed does not, but it stays in the table so you can ask for the repair history.

What the complaint data is, and is not. The windows come from NHTSA’s complaint file: 1.57 million distinct complaints filed by owners as of the September 2026 file, deduplicated per complaint, of which the roughly one third with an odometer reading feed the windows. It is owner-filed and self-selected: people file when something went wrong and they were unhappy enough to write it up. There is no denominator: the file does not say how many cars of that model year never had the problem, so a window is not a failure rate and the sheet never treats it as one. The mileage is the odometer at the time of the incident, as the owner typed it, checked by no one. A window tells you when the people who complained were complaining. That is useful on a note, and it is all it is.

The planning likelihoods are priors. One number shapes the set-aside’s known-work line and nothing else on the sheet: work already inside its window is weighted at 0.65, on the reasoning that some share of those cars had the work done by a prior owner. A second prior, 0.9 for work whose window opens later, lives in the consumer roadmap and does not reach the sheet. These are priors we chose, not rates we measured. They will be revised against outcomes as the ledger below fills, and the engine version on each sheet records which priors made it.

The bad-year comparison is a median, not a model. Expected volume for a model year is the median of its neighbors’ complaints over Y-2 to Y+2 on the same 6-year filing window, needing at least two neighbors and 30 complaints on this year’s window. The ratio of this year to that median is what prints; 1.75 or more flags. It is withheld outright when any neighbor has under a third of this year’s complaints, because a gap that size is a redesign or a spelling change in NHTSA’s files, and it says partial window for any model year whose six years have not run.

Recall completion is the manufacturer's figure. Each campaign’s completion is remedied vehicles over the involved population less the vehicles removed, from the latest quarterly or annual completion report the manufacturer filed with NHTSA, capped at 100 where a report listed more remedied than involved. The quarter it describes prints beside it. It is one number for the whole campaign and says nothing about this VIN.

Extension terms are read from the summary. The extended term is the longest years-and-miles pair stated in NHTSA’s summary of the bulletin (summaries usually state the original term and then the extension), and in force means this car’s age, counted from January of the model year, and its miles are both under it. Where the summary states no pair, the sheet says the term could not be read rather than guess.

What the sheet cannot know
  • Whether this particular car has the problem.

This list prints on every sheet, in the same words, from the same source as the list above. It is part of the product, not a footnote to it.

Our record

Our record, starting at zero

Every sheet run for a dealer is stamped and stored: the engine version that made it, the mileage it was run at, the date, the flag state, the flags and windows it drew, and the set-aside it suggested. No borrower data, ever. Dealers who tell us what happened to the car, whether it made it through the note and what it needed along the way, close the loop. Those outcomes will be published on this page monthly: how many sheets, how many outcomes, and how the flags held up against them. We will make no accuracy claim before 200 outcomes are on file. Today the count is zero, and this paragraph will say so until it is not.
