Pre-purchase walkaround

2003 Porsche 911 Carrera (996)

61,000 miles · asking $10,000
Budget this to put it right, likely due now
~$4,400
Then about $1,700 a year to keep it on the road. Five-year cost to own: ~$13,100.
The cheapest 911 for a reason. The M96 engine's IMS bearing dominates every conversation about these cars. Sorted examples with documentation are genuinely great value; unsorted ones are a bet.

What to look for on this one

Every used example of this chassis has the same questions. The bands show when each tends to surface; the gold line is this car at 61,000 miles.
IMS bearing retrofit$2,520-$4,500 if not done
0typical window 40k-120k · this car: 61k, inside the window150k mi
The intermediate shaft bearing can fail and destroy the engine. The single most famous failure mode in modern Porsche history. 2000-2004 single-row bearings are the highest risk. Retrofit is done with a clutch job since the transmission is already out. Usually none until failure. Metal glitter in the oil filter is the early warning. That's why the filter cut is non-negotiable at PPI.
Front control arms and suspension refresh$873-$1,845 if not done
0typical window 80k-130k · this car: 61k, ahead of it150k mi
Worn control arm bushings show up as a front-end shimmy under braking. Most 996s are at or past the age where the full front-end rubber needs doing. Front-end shimmy under braking, wandering on grooved pavement, clunks.

Hand this to your inspector

A $300 inspection against this list is the best money in the whole deal.
01Insist on a PPI at a Porsche specialist, not a general shop. The M96 has model-specific tells
02Ask for IMS retrofit documentation (invoice showing bearing part number and mileage). 'The seal was done' is not an IMS retrofit
03Have the oil filter cut open and inspected for metal or bearing material. The cheapest engine diagnostic available
04Borescope the cylinders for bore scoring, especially on 3.6 cars. Listen for cold-start ticking
Walking into a negotiation?

This roadmap as a PDF, priced for your zip code, with the inspection checklist, a fair price for this example, and the negotiation sheet. Saved to your garage the moment you pay.

This walkaround found ~$4,434 of work the records do not cover. If the sheet wins you even 1% of that at the table, the packet paid for itself 2x over.
