The 964 is notorious for leaks at the cylinder head studs, case through-bolts, and the chain box seals. Air-cooled flat-6 case sealing degrades with heat cycling and age. Persistent oil weeping down the case, spots on the garage floor, burning smell after drives.

The 964 uses a small rubber belt linking the two distributor rotors. It can fail and, if it does, causes rough running or damage. A vent update kit exists to prevent belt degradation. Rough running, misfire, or sudden stall.
