Pre-purchase walkaround
1987 Porsche 911 (930/3.2 Carrera)
52,000 miles · asking $82,000
Five-year cost to own, maintenance and fuel
~$24,100
The last of the pre-964 air-cooled 911s, the 3.2 Carrera is the sweet spot of the classic line with the desirable G50 5-speed from 1987 on. Money goes into maintaining a 30-plus year old air-cooled engine, chain tensioners, and rust prevention, plus the interior parts that are getting scarce.

What to look for on this one
Every used example of this chassis has the same questions. The bands show when each tends to surface; the gold line is this car at 52,000 miles.
Valve guide and top end wear$350-$1,250 if not done
0typical window 100k-180k · this car: 52k, ahead of it150k mi
High-mileage air-cooled heads wear valve guides. A top end rebuild is a known interval item on these motors. Blue smoke on startup or overrun, high oil consumption.
Gearbox synchro wear$1,100-$2,180 if not done
0typical window 80k-150k · this car: 52k, ahead of it150k mi
Pre-1987 cars use the 915 gearbox which develops weak 2nd synchro. The later G50 is stronger but clutch and shift bushings still wear. Notchy or baulking shifts, crunch into 2nd on the 915 box.
Chassis rustpriced only if found
Condition-driven, not mileage-driven, so it is not in the totals and inspection is the only answer. Bubbling at the front trunk battery area, wheel arches, sunroof, and floor pans.

Hand this to your inspector
A $300 inspection against this list is the best money in the whole deal.
01Confirm whether the chain tensioners have been upgraded to Carrera/pressure-fed units, ask for receipts
02Cold start and listen for top end rattle, watch for blue smoke on startup and overrun
03Lift the front trunk carpet and inspect the battery tray and suspension pan for rust
04Check floor pans, rear wheel arches, and sunroof drains for corrosion
