Tight factory bearing clearances on the S54 (especially cars built before ~6/2003) wear the rod bearings early. The community treats replacement every ~80-100k as mandatory insurance; a spun bearing is a $15k+ engine. Usually none until it's catastrophic. That's the problem. Metal in the oil filter or bottom-end knock means it's already too late.

The S54 VANOS unit has known failure points. Sheared exhaust hub tabs and loosening bolts can destroy the engine. Upgraded hardware kits are the community fix. Diesel-like rattle at idle that changes with a rev blip; rough idle or hesitation in bad cases.
Rear subframe mounting point crackspriced only if found
