Pre-purchase walkaround

2000 BMW 5 Series (E39)

mileage unknown
Budget this to put it right, likely due now
~$2,300
Then about $700 a year to keep it on the road. Five-year cost to own: ~$5,900.
Peak BMW build quality by reputation, with a well-mapped set of aging plastic and rubber failures. Six-cylinder cars are the sensible buy; the 540i's V8 adds real cost and the M5 is its own universe.

What to look for on this one

Every used example of this chassis has the same questions. The bands show when each tends to surface; the gold line is this car at 180,000 miles.
Complete cooling system overhaul$755-$1,510 if not done
0failures cluster 61k-94k · this car: 180k, past it200k mi
The defining E39 service: plastic radiator necks, expansion tank, water pump, and thermostat housing all age out around 80-100k. An overheat on the aluminum engines warps heads. The community does the whole system at once, preventatively. Coolant smell, low-coolant light, crusty residue on the expansion tank or radiator necks. Often lets go with no warning.
CCV system + valve cover gasket$303-$858 if not done
0failures cluster 78k-105k · this car: 180k, past it200k mi
The crankcase ventilation system clogs (catastrophically in cold climates, where it can hydrolock the engine with sludge) and the valve cover gasket leaks onto the exhaust. Usually done together. Oil seepage onto the exhaust, whistling idle, mayonnaise under the oil cap in cold climates.
Timing chain guides & valley pan (540i V8 only)priced only if found
Condition-driven, not mileage-driven, so it is not in the totals and inspection is the only answer. Rattle from the front of the V8 at cold start; coolant loss with no visible leak (valley pan).

Hand this to your inspector

A $300 inspection against this list is the best money in the whole deal.
01Ask for cooling system overhaul receipts with mileage. If it's original or unknown on an 80k+ car, price the full job into your offer
02540i: listen for chain rattle at cold start and ask specifically about timing guide replacement. Walk away from a rattling V8 unless it's priced accordingly
03Brake at 60 mph and feel for steering shimmy (thrust arm bushings)
04Check for the ABS/DSC/brake warning light trifecta on startup
Walking into a negotiation?

This roadmap as a PDF, priced for your zip code, with the inspection checklist, a fair price for this example, and the negotiation sheet. Saved to your garage the moment you pay.

This walkaround found ~$2,265 of work the records do not cover. If the sheet wins you even 1% of that at the table, the packet paid for itself 1x over.
